Your Google Account & FAQ
What is all this Google stuff? I'm confused...Account FAQQ: When do I receive my email address/account login?A: Newly enrolled students in grades 3 and up will receive their addresses during the first few days of class each Fall. Returning students' email addresses and passwords will remain the same from year-to-year throughout his/her enrollment at CUSD #3. New faculty and staff should receive their accounts sometime after hire but prior to official start date.
Q: What will the email addresses be used for?A: Teachers will instruct students to use this email with certain web tools that require a valid email address. There are many educational tools available on the web that are secure and meaningful, but they require the user to have a valid email address. Some examples might be online journaling, cloud storage, presentation creation, and even electronic submission of assignments.
Each teacher will use the email addresses differently. Additionally, email will be used for the school to send important information. Email should be checked frequently. |
Q: Who owns the account?
A: CUSD #3 owns the account and is able to monitor and access all content that is sent, received, and discarded within the school-issued address. The Acceptable Use clause located in the Student Handbook states that, "Users will be held personally responsible for the content of any and all email messages transmitted to recipients."
Review the Acceptable Use section in the Student Handbook.

Q: Will I receive a account each year?
A: No. Your email address will remain the same throughout the duration of your enrollment at CUSD#3. Graduating seniors' email addresses will remain active for 90 days after graduation, and will then will be deactivated. During that 90 days students are encouraged to transfer any email messages they wish to keep from the CUSD#3 account into a personal account. (Gmail is a web-based email client that will work nicely when transferring mail, because Google Apps for Education is CUSD #3's current email provider.)
Q: Can I change/reset my own password?
A: Yes. When you have a new account, you will be issued a password, and upon the first time you log in, you will be asked to change it to one of your choice. It must be at least 8 characters long, and include at least one letter and at least one number. Passwords are case-sensitive, which means that the difference between uppercase and lowercase letters matters.
Should you forget your password or wish to reset it after that for any reason, you must see Mrs. Webb in the MHS office or Mr. Thompson.

Q: Is there a public list or address book where I can find my classmates' email addresses? What about teachers?
A: No. Student email addresses are not public, and in order to email a student, you must ask them for their address. Teachers' email addresses can be found on the CUSD#3 site directory.
Q: How do I use Google Email?
A: There are several resources for learning how to use Google email. There are some links at the top of this page to get you started. And since Google created Gmail (the program CUSD#3 uses for email service), you can always "Google" search specific questions you might have.

Q: I already have a personal email address. Can I use that instead?
A: Personal email addresses are not to be used for school-related activities and correspondence. There are tools that come with the CUSD#3-issued email suite that you will be expected to use in class, and there are district-wide settings that may prohibit messages from outside the district (i.e. your personal email address) from sending correctly to a CUSD #3 address. Not only for those reasons but also for your own personal safety, it is best to separately maintain work/school and personal email accounts.
Q: Where do I go to ask questions or get help with my account in person?
A: If your teacher(s) cannot help you with your question about Google Apps email, Mrs. Webb can help. MHS office hours are (typically) as follows:
- M-F 11:30 - 3:30
- Located in MHS office, Rm. 133
Email Writing Do's & Don'ts
Do: Check email regularly
If you want your emails to be received and read in a timely manner, do so with your own inbox. Remember though, email is not instantaneous, and it can fail from time to time. If you send an email and do not hear back from the recipient, do not assume he or she has received it. Follow up to make sure. Do: Use a descriptive subject line
This helps the recipient of your message know what your message pertains to before opening it. While you're being descriptive, make sure the body of your message effectively gets your point across. Email is a complete waste of time if the message cannot be understood. Don't: Share others' email addresses
You shouldn't share email addresses that don't belong to you. Leave that up to the individual to decide who knows their address. |
Don't: Hit "Send" without double-checking
Whatever you say in cyberspace cannot be taken back. You have no control over where your message goes once you've hit send, so use common sense when writing and sending emails. Don't: Forward junk mail to others
Junk mail can be any type of long rambling story, urban myth, chain letter, collection of jokes, etc. Many of these can contain malware or software that is potentially harmful to computers. Do: Use opening and closing salutations
Specifically when corresponding with teachers, addressing them using opening and closing salutations is a good idea (same goes with employers and other people you don't know personally). For instance: Hello Mr. Smith, I have attached a copy of my final paper. Thank you, John Doe |
